Who This Estimate Is Built For
This page is for people who would pay for a total knee replacement themselves and want to know whether doing it in Colombia changes the total once recovery is counted. If insurance covers your surgery at home with a manageable share, a trip abroad rarely makes financial sense. If you are self-paying, the comparison is worth doing carefully, because a knee is an operation where the weeks after surgery cost almost as much attention as the surgery itself.
An estimate is not a quote. It is a list of the lines that belong in the budget and the questions that make two quotes describe the same thing.
What a Total Knee Replacement Includes
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the operation replaces the damaged joint surfaces with metal components that are either cemented or press-fit into bone, with a plastic spacer between them; the kneecap may also get a plastic button, though some surgeons skip that step (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026). The surgery itself usually takes one to two hours. Implant designs vary from patient to patient.
Before surgery, the evaluation typically includes a medical history, a physical exam of motion, stability, strength and alignment, and X-rays, occasionally with blood tests or an MRI. Many patients are also asked for a physical exam with their primary care doctor several weeks ahead, along with blood, urine and ECG tests (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026).
Each of those is a line. Put them in your estimate before you look at a single total:
- Orthopedic consultation and imaging.
- Pre-op medical clearance and tests, at home or in Colombia.
- The implant system, named by manufacturer and model.
- Surgeon, anesthesia and hospital.
- Blood-clot prevention measures and medicines.
- Physical therapy, both in Colombia and after you return.
A partial knee replacement is a different operation. If one quote is for a partial and another for a total, they are not comparable.
The US Side of the Comparison
Ask a US surgeon's office or hospital for a written self-pay quote that splits surgeon, anesthesia, hospital and implant. Hospitals have had to post their charges online since January 1, 2021, as a machine-readable file plus a consumer-friendly list of shoppable services (CMS, 2026). The file will not replace a quote, but it shows whether the implant is billed as a separate item at that hospital and what the hospital lists for its own services.
Ask specifically whether the quote assumes you go home the same day or stay in the hospital. OrthoInfo notes that some patients are discharged on the day of surgery while others are admitted, most likely overnight and sometimes longer, and that the plan should be agreed in advance (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026). A same-day quote and an inpatient quote are priced on different assumptions.
The Colombia Side
We do not print a Colombia knee replacement range, because we could not verify one against a reputable published source. Collect two or three written quotes from Colombian hospitals or orthopedic programs, ask each one to name the implant, state the nights assumed, and list physical therapy sessions included. Request a stated currency and a date on every quote.

Recovery Time Is the Largest Hidden Line
Knee replacement recovery is measured in weeks, and every week you stay abroad has a cost. OrthoInfo gives these benchmarks (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026):

The flight home is the other big variable. CDC says travel longer than four hours can raise blood-clot risk, and lists surgery or injury in the past three months among the factors that raise it further (CDC, accessed 2026). CDC suggests moving your legs and walking every one to two hours on long trips and talking to your doctor before travelling if you are at higher risk. Ask your surgeon when they will clear you to fly and what they want you to do on the plane, then book a return ticket you can change without a large fee.
Rehab Gets Budgeted Twice
A physical therapist teaches strengthening and range-of-motion exercises that you then repeat several times a day at home, and some patients get therapy at home or at a clinic during the first few weeks (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026). For an international patient that means two rehab budgets:
- In Colombia: sessions included in the quote, extra sessions at a stated price, and transport to them.
- At home: outpatient therapy after you return, and confirmation that a local therapist will take you on with records from abroad.
Line up the home therapist before you leave, not after you land.
Records and Follow-Up Back Home
CDC advises medical tourists to get copies of their overseas records in English and share them with any clinician who follows up, and notes the American College of Surgeons recommendation to obtain a complete set before returning home (CDC Yellow Book, 2026). For a knee, that set should include the operative report, implant details, imaging and the rehab plan.
It matters because problems can arrive after you are home. OrthoInfo says serious complications such as a joint infection occur in fewer than 2 percent of patients, and describes blood clots as one of the most common complications of knee replacement (OrthoInfo, AAOS, 2026). Uncommon is not never. Your estimate should include a local orthopedist who has agreed to see you, and you should know who you would call first. What to Include in a Knee Quote Request
- Which knee, how long it has been painful, and what treatments you have already tried.
- Recent knee X-ray reports and, if possible, the images through the provider's secure channel.
- Any earlier surgery on that knee, including arthroscopy, with dates.
- Health conditions and medications, especially blood thinners.
- Whether you can manage stairs and how you would get around during the first weeks.
- How many weeks you can stay, and who will travel with you.
The more of this the surgeon sees before quoting, the less likely the plan and the price are to change after the in-person exam.
